Many of NMIT's academic staff are involved in conducting research. Most of the research at NMIT is focused on our degree and diploma programme areas.

Research Output

Research at NMIT is predominantly undertaken by degree teaching staff and is characterised by applied research, creative endeavour, and practice-based activity.

Staff engage with public and private sector partners and contribute to product development and organisational innovation. Research outputs are disseminated through peer-reviewed and other types of written publications, as well as through conferences, exhibitions and art installations.

Celebrating Research Hui

Every year in October, the Research and Innovation Office hosts their annual NMIT Celebrating Research hui, where staff can present their outcomes, work in progress, or trial their presentation prior to attending a conference. The range of presentations and topics is diverse. In 2025, the Bachelor or Social Work programme staff presented their emerging research project on mate wareware (dementia) and the care and support of whānau and family carers.
