Environmental Science research at NMIT focuses on understanding and improving the sustainability of natural and managed ecosystems in Te Tauihu and beyond.

Research activities include viticulture and soil science, freshwater and marine ecology, aquaculture, environmental monitoring, sustainable resource management, and studies of environmental impacts on people and ecosystems. NMIT researchers work closely with industry, communities, iwi, and research partners to generate practical knowledge that supports environmental stewardship, sustainable production systems, and informed decision-making.

    Dr Eric Buenz Research Professor

    Dr Eric Buenz is an expert in natural products, immunology, neurology, drug discovery and business development.  In 2024, he completed a research project on the use of lead ammunition and how it contaminates the meat hunters harvest with lead fragments.
